My mother-in-law is an 87-year old, well-controlled diabetic. She is no longer on insulin but does take Glucophage. She has severe arthritis in her hands, feet, and spine. In the last few months her back pain has been getting worse and she has stopped eating much. Because she's not eating, she is becoming weaker and can no longer climb the stairs to her bathroom and bedroom. Essentially, she can no longer be left alone. She is temporarilly living with her granddaughter and we are trying to come up with a dietary plan that gives her the biggest nutritional bang for the least amount of food. She doesn't seem to be able to eat much at one sitting, so I have suggested 6 small meals per day. Can you help us to choose foods that will help? I've tried to supplement her intake with Glucerna shakes or bars, but she wrinkles up her nose and refuses to eat them.
