swallowing problems

What could cause swallowing problems where food and or drink get stuck in your sternum causing a person to pass out and 3 other family members have the same thing happening to them?

My son-in-law just recently got past this problem, he had the same situation for about 10 years, and he is only 24 years old! Turns out he had polyps in his esophagus. They were removed, and he's fine now.
